Hey guys! I get asked a lot about my background. Lots of people get confused about the fact that I’m Brazilian but I speak English and I look Japanese. In this video hopefully you’ll be able to understand where I come from a little better. If you have any questions please leave them down below and I’ll do my best to answer them.

Keep your eyes peeled for the next two videos I’m doing on the same topic. I’ll be sharing my experience as a Japanese-Brazilian living in Tokyo, Japan then my experience living in the south of the US.

Don’t forget to leave a thumbs up if you enjoyed the video and subscribe if you haven’t already.

  1. I'm japanese and i had a lot of nikkei Brazilian friends couple Years ago, and we look at them in a very different way because even though they look like japanese their personalities are completely different and usually they are friends with everyone, like Filipino, Thai, americans, japanese etc …. We always see nikkei Brazilians as very friendly people now that I'm watching this video i found out about a lot of things that i didn't know about them back then.

  2. Don’t be offended by anything being proud about yourself that’s what makes you beautiful 🇯🇵🇧🇷❤️

  3. Thank you for telling us about your experiences growing up as a japanese-brazilian. It is really helpful insight for myself (as someone who is not from Brazil) as I'm currently writing a novel with a japanese-brazilian character in it. Your video gives me a better understanding of what some japanese-brazilians go through. Kisses from Canada 🇨🇦😘

  4. Omg, no disrespect but you are so pretty. I’m so sorry if you had to deal with any adversity due to your background

  5. I'm not a Japanese Brazilian, but a Japanese American. I want to connect with the culture my family lost through many generations ago should I?. Also It seems everyone where I live sees me as Japanese. However it seems like Japanese from Japan would most likely see me as a dumb American. Did this happen to you where you felt like people from both sides just don't want you.

  6. 🇧🇷❤🇯🇵 In Brazil, among all foreigners people ( americans, germans, etc). JAPANESE people are ADMIRED and RESPECTED above all. Why? Their actions say for them. Brazil has the biggest japanese descent population outside Japan. We have almost 2 ( two) millions japanese descent in Brazil. But most of them, do not have the same behavior than japaneses born and raised in Japan. In Brazil, most japanese descent are considered japanese and they are called , no rare, by the name " Japa". But once these japanese descent are in Japan, they ARE NOT consider ed " japanese " by japaneses born and raised in Japan. In my city, there is a host house . Its belongs to my friend. When a japanese person ( raised and educated in Japan) come to visit it. My friend give to them the house's key and everything goes perfect. Now, this IS NOT possible for americans , germans, french , etc. Japanese people, in geral, are honest, clean , reserved and very polite. We LOVE them. YOU JAPANESE PEOPLE BORN AND RAISED IN JAPAN ARE MORE THAN WELCOME IN BRAZIL. With no daubts, people all over the world has a LOT TO LEARN from japanese people. 🇧🇷❤🇯🇵

  7. That's nice you only felt different until you reached high school. The first time I felt different for being Asian was in the 1st grade 6 years old when someone said I was Chinese in a derogatory finger pointing manner and I'm half Thai half caucasian.

  8. Growing up in Brazil as a Chinese kid I felt different right away. In primary school all the Brazilian kids would call me “Japonês” and pull their eyes to make fun of me.

  9. This video was suggested to me because I watched few videos about Japanese/Brazilian decent that moved back to Japan and made me sad how badly they are treated. That they don’t consider hem Japanese even if they look Japanese. The majority can only work on factories and they are never accepted by the community. That the government doesn’t care if the kids attend or did well in school nor does the school.

  11. Asians need to stop apologizing to others. the stereotype that Japanese or East Asians are good in math is a worldwide perception. it is not our job to prove them right or wrong. And if you did hang out w/out Japanese because you can relate to each other, why should you apologize for it? Besides, I see Jews, Blacks, white Latinos, black Latinos prefer to hang out with people that look like them. Asians have the right to hang out w/who make us feel comfortable.

  12. Racism is dumb. I upset everyone where I grew up in the USA for not playing to 'type.' No I'm not poor, I'm not a bastard, I'm not a refugee from South of the border, and I'm not a Leftist–yet any of that can be presumed just from my appearance. People are individuals, each with their own stories in life. That should be obvious these days but I guess not.

Brazil is getting rid of its racial quota systems right? We still can't get rid of Affirmative Action, even after electing a Black President. Ridiculous.

  14. Not only many brazilians will try to say our own people from japanese descend aren't brazilians even if they are like the fourth generation, brazilian in all aspects. The foreigner won't accept they are brazilian as well, like trying to picture what we look like and that is not asian. We brazilian don't have a poster face you can look and be sure "Oh yes, this is a brazilian". We can look like anything, but there are still a LOT of ignorance about how Brazil recieved many immigrants from all over the place and made us a very mixed and cosmopolitan culture that was born our of a great cultural exchange.

  16. I know this is 100% irrelevant to the video, but as of today you are my internet crush :3

Internet crush is like Public Transportation Crush, only that the chances of anything ever happening are lower 🙁

  18. This is really surprising to me actually, i was born in brazil too and i have a japenese brazilian friend and ive never seen anyone projecting this type of sterotypes into her. Maybe thats just a specific case or maybe the younger generation doesnt really do that. I grew up in rio de janeiro and im still a teenager but when i lived in brazil, i had a lot of asian decent friends, maybe there was some type of mocking that i just couldnt see because it wasnt done to me but i dont think so, my asian descent friends were actually quite "popular" 😅. I think things are a little bit better in brazil nowadays, and i hope it keeps improving in the next generation of kids 😊

  19. So, Congratulations! you just found out you are a TCK. ( Third culture child or Kid ) Welcome to the club!🎉 My dad if from Trinidad and Tobago my mom Brazilian, my wife is American and I'm this very confused Brazilian American guy that live in the USA . 🤣🤣🤣

  20. I think it all has to do with the generation you lived in. In my generation I was one of the only ones in school who was passionate about Japanese culture. In the 1990s, saying that you wanted to date a Japanese woman, or that you wanted to learn Japanese, was still seen as exotic. But in the 2000s, Japanese culture was assimilated again, and Asians are seen as attractive to many people.Brazil is very diverse, and at the same time there is a sectorization in the culture There are people who find blacks more attractive, others find Asians or whites. I know an evangelical church in São Paulo in Liberdade, that pastor is Japanese and the choir is black. There in this church it is common to see black people with slanted eyes and Japanese people with Black Power hair.
I believe that this mixture is almost exclusive to Brazil, in such a natural way.

  21. ARe you ever stereotyped as a magical hybrid between japanese and brasillians; with all of the strengths and none of the weaknesses?

  22. The only thing confusing is your surname being "smith" because it makes me remember " Mr and Mrs Smith". This start a " what is your real name, Mrs?" Whole thing in my head

  23. Brazil is the most racist country in the world. Racism in Brazil is a perfect crime

  24. I'm just wondering how you speak English so fluently compared to other Brazilians and non English speaking countries in general

  25. I'm so happy that she made it to Japan. What a nightmare. Brazil isn't anywhere near as nice as Japan is right now. Which defeats the purpose of immigrating to Brazil. I sure hope she will find happiness and be able to heal from such abuse of white supremacy and white privilege found all over the Americas

  26. Ok.

  27. What do you mean with "you don't have Brazilian face"? As we all know brazil is a huge mix of people, race, culture. You are not the only descendent in Brazil, why the h… Nikkeijin are so s… Proud?

  28. I’m Korean (well could be north and south) and I studied Japanese translation in college and I’m learning Brazilian Portuguese to go to Brazil. Thank you for this video, it helps me to understand more about Brazil!

  29. I'm learning English, I'm practicing listening without subtitles. The Japanese in Brazil are an interesting group, and I would like to ask that the Japanese in Brazil can generally speak several languages?

  30. Interesting story! I’m also Japanese Brazilian but I have different perspective. I made a video about that too 😊

  31. The only Stereotype Rio Grande do Sul has is, is not even them being smart, but y’all are geniuses, Japanese descendants always surprised me with how astute they we're, and how easily they can surpass challenges and help get the group’s act together.

    Sorry for the stereotypes :/
