The Coventry Carol is from a late Medieval play covering the story of the nativity, which ends with The Massacre of the Innocents. It recounts the biblical story of Herod ordering the murder of newborns, in an attempt to suppress the threat of the new ‘King of the Jews’, and shows us the mothers comforting their children.

This particular arrangement is adapted from Thomas Sharpe’s transcription of an earlier manuscript which no longer survives, as many arrangements from the 19th Century onwards adapt the metre to a stricter 3/4 timing and remove the false relation (clash) that appears towards the end of the verses. Dr Jeff Charest has written an original accompaniment part for the lyre which he plays here.

The lyre is a modern reproduction of a 6-stringed Anglo-Saxon lyre found in the Sutton-Hoo burial site. This lyre type, then known as a hearpe, dates to the early 7th century CE when bards, ‘scops’, played it to accompany recitals of poems like Beowulf in Anglo-Saxon mead halls. Its 6 strings were often made of horsehair, gut, or, as on this lyre, red brass, and typically tuned to CDEFGA, in relative pitch.

The painting is Massacre of the Innocents by Sébastien Bourdon, circa 1650.
