Liverpool FC vs Crystal Palace: Score prediction & betting tips

Liverpool come into Wednesday’s clash with Palace hoping to go a step closer to being crowned champions.

The 0-0 draw at Everton means they won’t win the title at home to Palace, as long as Manchester City beat Burnley on Monday night.

However, before minds drift to celebrations, there remains a game of football to be won first.

Crystal Palace remain a ‘bogey-side’ in the minds of many Liverpool fans. Not least, due to the part their played in Liverpool’s failed title bid of 2013/14. In what is now a considered a Premier League classic, Palace famously came back from 0-3 down to draw 3-3 with a goal right at the death.

Can the Eagles throw another spanner in the works of a Liverpool title challenge? Or will Liverpool finally exercise those demons with a thumping of this old foe?

101 Great Goals predicts: Liverpool FC 2 – 1 Crystal Palace

Liverpool FC vs Crystal Palace: What are the betting odds?

Liverpool have won all 15 of their league matches at Anfield this season. They have also won each of their last 5 matches against Crystal Palace. This puts the Reds as heavy 2/11 favourites to extend their home winning run to 23 consecutive league matches here.

Matches between the teams are usually close affairs. Only 2 of the last 9 have been separated by more than a 1-goal margin. This could put the 11/2 odds of a draw here as extremely good value.

Crystal Palace come into the match having won their last 4 matches. They are also the last team to register an away league win at Anfield. Christian Benteke was the hero, scoring both goals in a 1-2 win in April 2017. The odds of a repeat performance look slim though, as reflected by the 14/1 odds.

Liverpool FC vs Crystal Palace: Most likely goalscorers?

Sadio Mané has a history of terrorising the Crystal Palace defence. The Senegalese international has scored 8 and assisted 2 in 10 appearance against the Eagles. Sadio has scored in each of this last 5 appearances in this fixture. He is 10/3 to score the opening goal of the game, as he did when the sides met at Selhurst Park back in November. Or you can back Mané at 5/6 to score at any time during the match.

Roberto Firmino scored an 85th minute winner for Liverpool when the sides met earlier this season. It was his 4th goal against Palace in 9 games. ‘Bobby’ hasn’t had the best of luck this season in front of goal but you can back him to fix that with a goal here at 6/5. Or you can find odds of 9/2 for Firmino to score the game’s opening goal.

Christian Benteke is another player who hasn’t scored enough goals this season. He failed to get a single shot off during Palace’s 0-2 win in Bournemouth on Saturday. However, Benteke has a great record against his former club, with 7 goals and an assist in 12 games. This includes both goals in their 1-2 win here back in 2017. This sees the Belgian international start the game with odds of 5/1 to get on the score-sheet. Or you can back Benteke to bag the game’s opener at 16/1.

Liverpool FC vs Crystal Palace: Match preview

On 8th April 1990, Crystal Palace shocked English football defeating Liverpool 4-3 in the FA Cup Semi-Final at Villa Park. Everyone expected Liverpool to roll over the Eagles having watched the Reds smash 9 past them earlier in the season. Nicol (2), McMahon, Rush, Gillespie, Beardsley, Aldridge, Barnes and Hysén all getting on the scoresheet in one of English footballs worst hammerings.

So, when Andy Gray scored just before the final whistle to equalise for Palace, taking the game into extra-time, you sensed they were ready to get their revenge. Alan Pardew’s 109th minute winner sent the Palace end into euphoria. They had done it! The Palace were going to Wembley! They had killed Liverpool’s dream of another league and cup double.

Ever since then, Liverpool fans have treated games against Palace with apprehension. And with good reason. The Eagles completed a league double over Liverpool just two years later for the only time in their history. They also eliminated the Reds from the early rounds of the domestic cups on 3 occasions since then.

Then we have the match Crystal Palace have dubbed ‘Crystanbul’. Coming from 3-0 behind to win a point, killing Liverpool’s 2013/14 title challenge in the process.

A recurring theme of Klopp’s message to both fans and players since joining the club is the need for this Liverpool team to make their own history. To not allow for anything that has happened in the past to act as a burden.

This includes in breaking the fear of playing ‘bogey-sides’. Or that Liverpool will struggle against lower sides as it has traditionally been their Achilles heel. There is no better indicator of this than Liverpool’s results against Palace in recent seasons. Klopp’s Reds picking up 21 points from a possible 24 against Palace; more than any other side.

While the games are usually close in score-line – and the Reds will certainly expect a tough match once again – they know they have what it takes to grind Palace down and grab another vital 3 points at Anfield.

Liverpool FC team news vs Crystal Palace

Nathaniel Clyne and Xherdan Shaqiri remain ruled out from the side that travelled to Goodison Park on Sunday.

At Everton, Liverpool picked up two new injuries. Both James Milner and Joel Matip are expected to miss this game.

In more positive news, Andy Robertson and Mo Salah, both of whom played no role in the Merseyside derby, are expected to play.

With under 72-hours between the final whistle of the Merseyside Derby and this match, Klopp may look to fresh legs. Squad players such as Lovren, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lallana and Origi will be among those hoping to benefit from rotation.

Crystal Palace team news vs Liverpool FC

Martin Kelly is no closer to a return after another injury set-back. He picked up a calf injury to add to the thigh injury that he already had.

Jeffrey Schlupp and James Tomkins also missed the trip to Bournemouth on Saturday. They both picked up fresh injuries after returning to training in May.

Crystal Palace may also look to rotate their side from the one who won at the weekend. Andros Townsend, Max Meyer, James McCarthy and Mamadou Sakho would be the most likely to be rotated into the starting XI.

Teenage striker, Brandon Pierrick, could be in line for his first start for Palace after another disappointing showing from Christian Benteke. The former Liverpool striker seemed to lose possession with almost every touch of the ball. He also didn’t register a single shot before being withdrawn 15 minutes from time.
