In a war on suicide, who is the enemy?
‘Saving 10,000’ is the story of an Irishman’s personal passion to uncover the true causes of the high suicide rate in Japan. With the help of front-line experts and ordinary Japanese, many touched by the horror of suicide, the movie delivers practical proposals on how Japan can win a war on suicide. However with suicide such a taboo, the odds are nobody will listen. Or will they?

Throughout the documentary interviews are conducted with various people connected to suicide, everything from authors, journalists, police, health care workers, and more. As we delve deeper into the reasons behind this phenomenon in Japan, we see that while it may be a complex topic, the reasons are often not hard to grasp. So why is no one doing anything? Well, people are, but is it enough?

The problem of suicide in Japan is big enough, that Wikipedia has an entire page dedicated to just that issue.
“Suicide in Japan has become a significant national social issue. Japan has a relatively high suicide rate, but the number of suicides is declining and has been under 30,000 for 2 consecutive years. It is the leading cause of death in men aged 20–44.

Factors in suicide include unemployment, depression, and social pressures. In 2007, the National Police Agency revised the categorization of motives for suicide into a division of 50 reasons with up to three reasons listed for each suicide. Suicides traced to losing jobs surged 65.3 percent while those attributed to hardships in life increased 34.3 percent. Depression remained at the top of the list for the third year in a row, rising 7.1 percent from the previous year.

There has been a rapid increase in suicides since the 1990s. For example, 1998 saw a 34.7% increase over the previous year. This has prompted the Japanese government to react by increasing funding to treat the causes of suicide and those recovering from failed suicides.”

Journeyman Pictures, also has a good documentary on this issue. It focuses on the frightening concept of child suicide in Japan, often the result of bullying and the harsh discipline employed in Japanese schools. It’s called “Japan child suicide epidemic driven by school discipline” and can be found here:

We thank you for watching this, and hope that you have learned more about these serious social issues in Japan. If you, or someone you know, is depressed or suicidal, please seek appropriate help before it’s too late.

Suicide is never the answer.

  1. After 15 years of 30,000+ suicides each year in Japan (1997-2011), the 2017 figure has fallen to 21,140 due to the efforts of thousands of unseen suicide prevention volunteers like all those heroes answering calls on helplines each day and night. Please keep up your brave and amazing efforts to save lives as the tide is starting to turn in Japan.

  4. I went to Toujinbou in Fukui, because I want to die. but I culdn't die. I don't know why but just scared to die. but I still wanna die

  5. Thank you for this great video which compassionately talks about suicide. Understanding hopefully leads to compassion and action. Each of us has the ability to save someone from this permanent solution to a temporary problem by noticing, caring and talking. 6.

  7. Please let me post following crowdfunding for a documentary movie very much related to this topic and very much worth supporting: Event: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/thethingswecarry/the-invincible-compass?fbclid=IwAR2rYQEAcsgUjlf-OWZWiPvq4T_kTIDb97QDQaHPb0AJchAMb2-TOhnj-ow

If those young Japanese youngsters in the orphanage do not get the mental care and support there is a high risk that they take their lives. The crowdfunding runs for another 18 hrs. I hope this post will gain the remaining funding so Matt Miller can bring his work to end.

I haven't met Matt Miller in person but I felt a strong need to support him in this. Life is precious. Thank you for your understanding and support.

  10. Still watching. Greatest documentary ever seen.
It's different between dying and stop living. All the people never want to kill themselves. They are deadly exhausted to live.

I think it’s because the Japanese society it’s extremely wrong. But they are sure their system of believes are the only good ones. This sexual abuse is are not punished. The economic problems are totally higher to hide it. They extremely care to don’t disturb anyone else it’s hurting everyone in there! Please, wake up!

  12. Childhood. Communicaton skills, problem solving skills. Knowing yourself and how to build a futre. Knowing human nature and how to align yourself and protect yourself.

  13. The suicide rate spiked during the lost 30 years. As Japan's economy is getting better, the suicide rate goes down as a result?

  14. I love this man's passion. i do. He's not a typical host of a documentary….just stating the facts. You can tell it hurts and angers him. We need more suicide awareness instead of it being a shameful thing to talk about. I always told my teenagers; suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

  15. I imagine Japanese people in boxes, called studio apartments, working for a corporation of sociopaths that intimidate and degrade workers for fun every single day……..and their resting hours consumed by watching anemia and hentai cartoons and dressing like soft-porn stars cartoon characters

  16. I always wonder of suicide.
🙁 If I died, it would be okay?
🙁 Why I live? It is no use living my life anymore.

    I think like that.

  17. When I first time visited Japan in 2017, just when I arrived to Osaka my friend looked very off. Later I heard from him that his friend had committed suicide over depth, but also when I arrived I got to stay in a small apartment under a railway witch my friends other friend had offered me and he allowed me to stay there for free! I was waiting to meet him so badly during that 6-week vacation, but he also tried to commit suicide, but luckily he survived. I thought I could go and see him, but he was isolated from other people and his mother was the only person who was allowed to see him. Kinda puts the whole thing into a perspective how common it is and how poorly Japan is helping people with depression and suicidal tendencies. All of the things said in this documentary are heavily true.

  19. sometimes i have a feeling to end my life , this world is insane , make humans as a slave ,, Why we live here ? if there is no life at all , we only live here to work as slaves , , , THIS IS NOT JUST IN JAPAN BUT THIS IS REALITY

  20. This took my breath away. Knocked it right out of my chest. Every parent should see this. Every person should see this.

  22. Watching this video in 2018, thanks for sharing it. I worked in Japanese company and so true about the peer pressure to stay back after office hours. I still don't get it on why is it affect them too much to leave while jobs are already done just because others might think or say something. For me this is not the culture but more to mindset and principal.
I hope the trend of commiting suicide has reduced by now.

  23. Capitalism + Materialism = SUPREME EVIL !!!!!!
This situation happens in every high developed country , not only in Japan. People will be made to be machine by rigid system. No more feeling , love , caring , everything is only for making money for state and die , life is that's it. Evolution of human is so fucking insane. Where the fuck are we go ?

  24. Oh my gosh, thank you for uploading this! I have never been aware that the war on suicide has been so hard 🙁 It awakened me. I will surely check on people now! 🙁

  25. We love you, Japan 💗💗💗💗💗 Please stop killing yourselves and educate yourselves on depressions instead: I have had chronical depressions since the age of 11. I keep them under control by eating lot of green leaf vegetables, exercising six times a week, taking a cold shower every day, avoiding processed food, limiting my sugar intake…and drinking absolutely NO alcohol what so ever. Stay alive, Japan…we do not want to loose you! With love from Scandinavia 💗

And to the corporates in Japan: the human mind and intellect is unique and our brains are marvelous. But the human body is not like a robot and the human brain is not a computer. Humans are not machines: we need time to reflect, rest, relax, and rejuvinate. Pressuring people do not make them more productive, instead it wears them down…to death!

  26. I believe this is because of lack of support from families and friends. Most Japanese are alone

  27. In America we have a gangstalking problem that makes people kill themselves I almost did it a few times

  28. Might be Korea andJapan were occupied by foreign countries. Has anyone looked at what occupation does to mental health and the demise of a culture. It will be interesting to see what happens in Iraq. Just a thought🤔🤔🤔😉🌹😇
