LULLAY LULLAY COVENTRY CAROL
Lullay, lullay, my little tiny child
By, by, lullay, lullay
Lullay, lullay my little tiny child
By, by, lullay, lullay
O sisters too, how may we do?
For to preserve this day
This poor young ling of whom we do sing
By, by, lullay, lullay
Herod the king in his raging
Charged, he hath this day
His men of might in his own sight
All children young to slay
Then woe is me, poor child for thee
And ever mourn and say
For thy parting nor say nor sing
By, by, lullay, lullay
Lullay, lullay, my little tiny child
By, by, lullay, lullay
Lullay, lullay my little tiny child
By, by, lullay, lull
By,by, lullay, lull
By, by, lullay, lullay

  1. Wow…just came across this version! When it first came to my (a pro vocalist/musician)—and the secular world's attention, thanks to MTV in 1987—I was not saved, and had no idea what it was really about. The internet was not available to the masses then, to quickly look up lyrics. It's a very dark carol; speaks of how jealous King Herod was to learn from the Wise Men, of a baby born and prophesied to become King. Herod made a decree to have all babies murdered, from ages 0 to 2-3 years old, to try to stop this; children often became kings (OT good King Josiah, was 8 y/o), even though that doesn't make much sense to us nor happens these days. We know that Joseph was told in a dream, to flee to Egypt with Mary and Jesus, until the threat was over. Makes me think of the ongoing murders of pre-born babies, for those wanting to 'rule' their own bodies/lives…or afraid/ashamed, and feeling there's no where to turn. PRAISE GOD, CHRIST IS STILL THEE ANSWER! May we be bold and speak the GOOD NEWS to unmarried young girls AND guys, and also steer them to adoption to a capable home! May we donate to our local Christian crisis pregnancy centers, or halfway houses for pregnant unwed mothers. Even as our world is getting more and more immoral and perverse, we must still keep trying to stem the sin-tide wherever we can, for the sake of Christ and the minds and bodies Satan is trying to 'seek, kill and destroy'! Lord, have mercy! Peace to all my fellow believers here/reading this…merry CHRISTmas!

  2. Music can be interpreted differently by various artists. This is a unique interpretation. It may not sound like a lullaby but it does express the rage of Herod and especially the urgent, hurtful rage of the mothers. Bravo!

  3. Is it only me or did anyone think she was a he for awhile? (Not in a mean way) also this was my most favorite Christmas song when I was younger and I would fall asleep to it and I loved it so much!

  4. This song haunts, as it should. Actual babies were slaughtered, actual mothers were shattered.

  5. This is the most poignant lament I have ever heard, I've always loved the melody and now the words learned by heart, brought to life in the most beautiful rendition ever . : made me weep, Annie Lennox's voice is sublime . .

  6. You realise the song is the song of the mothers of all the male babies who were murdered by Herod when he was trying to kill Jesus? Can you imagine trying to quiet a crying baby so that you will not be discovered by the soldiers sent to kill your child? This song should sound DEVASTATING.

  7. How two people can hear something completely different, amazes me. Yes, this is a lullaby, but it is a heart wrenching lament to a death of a child from a mothers heart. I do not hear wailing and definitely not mocking hatred as you state. Only a mothers pain for the imminent death of her newborn can be felt in the sadness of the lyrics. That is what I hear as I listen. The African Children's Choir only adds to the many levels of emotion I feel as I listen.

  8. Ear-bleedingly bad rendition! This is supposed to be a lullaby, not a wailing song of mocking hatred.

  9. Moving and compelling – song from the Middle Ages turned into a monument to the plights and horrors of today, Africa and beyond… Superb
