Parkour is the perfect sandbox for the Atlas team at Boston Dynamics to experiment with new behaviors. In this video our humanoid robots demonstrate their whole-body athletics, maintaining its balance through a variety of rapidly changing, high-energy activities. Through jumps, balance beams, and vaults, we demonstrate how we push Atlas to its limits to discover the next generation of mobility, perception, and athletic intelligence.

How does Atlas do parkour? Go behind the scenes in the lab:

  1. Part of what makes these robots seem so Human is their use of tempo when moving, my guess is they were programmed specifically to keep a certain tempo throughout movement, and that tempo is likely the rough time it takes their software to calculate what types of movements they need to make in 3D space to properly perform these movements.

Realistically, robots idealized for movement wouldn't use tempo, animals evolved in tangent with tempo and it's used in many of our internal systems, making it necessary, but there's no reason for artificial intelligence to benefit from the same function. I'd like to see a Boston Dynamics robot functioning without any tempo limitations, aside from when they're scaling difficult terrain.

  2. I think what's impressive here, is that these two brilliant machines are playing a musical/rhythm with their feet. Maybe I'm confused but I think that boxes and angle landing pad's are of different size's on purpose… they all make a different percussion sounds, and around 0:38 sounded like a build up to a finish and not a robot balancing issue. It sound's like the robots are even stomping their feet louder or softer to play an emphasis. Now again.. I might be confused about all of this, but if you replay this video and close your eye's and just listen…

  3. Suggestions for the next video:
    1) Hopscotch
    2) Pirouette
    3) Slack line
    4) Pole dance
    5) “Add to cart” button

  4. 0:35 His hands are shaking like a real person. The only barrier for him to replace the soldiers is his energy

  5. While this is cool, this is terrible for humanity. Of course I'm crazy. Until i'm not… Fuck 2022!

  6. I'm just sad I won't be alive to see these in about 50 years when robots become more common in society
