Barcelona vs Napoli: Match preview
Can Barcelona recapture their former European glories?
In the last two seasons, they’ve been catastrophically beaten by Roma and then Liverpool despite winning the first legs of those ties 4-1 and 3-0 respectively.
This means the Catalan side have not won this competition or even reached a final for five seasons despite winning the trophy four times in nine years before that.
This season has been close to a disaster for them.
Defeats in the Supercopa de España semi-finals, Copa del Rey quarter-finals and a second-place finish in La Liga means they have not won any silverware.
The last time they didn’t win a trophy of any kind was 2007/08.
Barça only took 24 points from 33 available after the restart, allowing Real Madrid to overtake them and, eventually, finish five points clear.
Thus, Quique Setién is under huge pressure despite only getting the job on 13 January.
They are in a decent position after a first leg 1-1 draw at Stadio San Paolo in February.
Dries Mertens’s curling shot opened the scoring before Antoine Griezmann got a vital equaliser in the second half.
Will Barça be too strong for their Italian opposition?
Can Napoli stun Camp Nou?
Napoli meanwhile will feel they have a great chance of an upset and rightly so.
Their season became an instant success in the first week of restart as they beat Juventus on penalties in the Coppa Italia final.
This means, for next season, they’ve qualified for the Europa League group stage which they would not have otherwise done, finishing seventh in Serie A.
Despite this lowly finish, I Partenopei are actually in decent form, winning ten of their last 15 league games.
They’re much improved under Gennaro Gattuso and now have a shot at some club history.
This is only Napoli’s third appearance at this stage of a European Cup/ Champions League but they’ve never gone further, losing to eventual winners Chelsea in 2012 and Real Madrid in 2017.
That could be a good omen for Barça fans.
The winners of this tie will take on either Chelsea or Bayern Munich on 14 August at Estádio da Luz.
So far this season Gli Azzurri have already beaten Liverpool, Juventus, Lazio and Inter.
Can they knock out four-times European champions Barcelona here?
Barcelona team news vs Napoli
Quique Setién already thin squad is not at full strength for this huge clash and that could prove to be problematic.
Marc-André ter Stegen, who’s kept 17 clean sheets in 44 appearances this season, will continue in goal as always.
In defence, Clément Lenglet is Gerard Piqué’s regular partner thanks in no small part to Samuel Umtiti’s poor form.
Nélson Semedo is getting a run in the side at right-back with Jordi Alba on the other side.
Semedo at right-back means Sergi Roberto can push into midfield where he is needed for this game.
Because Sergio Busquets and Arturo Vidal were both booked in the first leg so are both suspended.
So, Roberto could play the anchor role with Ivan Rakitić and fit again Frenkie de Jong alongside.
Riqui Puig is the other option; Athur has not featured since his move to Juventus was confirmed.
Further forward, Antoine Griezmann is unlikely to be fit after missing the last two games of the season.
So, Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez could be joined in attack by Ansu Fati.
He’s still only 17 but he’s scored eight goals this season including against Inter at San Siro in the group stages.
Martin Braithwaite is the other option; Ousmane Dembélé is injured.
Will Barcelona progress?
Napoli team news vs Barcelona
Unlike their hosts, Gennaro Gattuso’s side played as recently as the weekend but his XI could be at full stenght.
Alex Meret’s injury means David Ospina will start in goal although this was likely to be the case anyway.
At the back, Kalidou Koulibaly and Kostas Manolas are first-choice despite the fact Nikola Maksimović has played a lot since the restart.
Mário Rui will start at left-back with Giovanni Di Lorenzo preferred to Elseid Hysaj on the other side.
Their first-choice midfield trio will be fielded.
This is Diego Demme at the base with Fabián Ruiz and Piotr Zieliński further forward.
Stanislav Lobotka, Allan and Elif Elmas would therefore miss out.
In attack, Matteo Politano could come in for José Callejón on the right.
He’d join Lorenzo Insigne and Dries Mertens is a frightening front three.
Hirving Lozano and Arkadiusz Milik will be in reserve.
Fernando Llorente is injured.
Can Napoli become the first visitors to win a European game at Camp Nou since Bayern Munich in 2013?
