La Bourreé d’Achille is a baroque dance which we recorded live when we performed a ‘A Yuletide Pageant’, presented in Nov/Dec 2019 by the Courtly Arts Performers of Victoria. This concert constituted a courtly celebration of dance and music spanning four centuries.

Instrumentation: Baroque recorders, Bass Viol, Baroque guitar

The following is taken from the observations of our Masters of Ceremony, Roderick Laird and David Ranson:
“At the court of Versailles, baroque splendour reached its zenith, with extravagant lighting and decoration embellishing its own sumptuous revelry.
As we move through the renaissance to the baroque in our concert, we will see how both music and dance evolved. The formality and sophistication of Purcell’s Fantasia … is built on renaissance forms with the shocking new harmonies of the baroque.….
….The simple, shared symmetries of renaissance dance encouraged the happy participation of all courtiers both young and old, the well and the infirm. In contrast the new baroque aesthetic found beauty in complexity and asymmetry. The new choreography demanded a high degree of skill, elegance and energy from the dancer – at a level not all at court could find. Astute mimicry of your fellow dancers no longer sufficed to carry you through the dance.”
