Whenever I hang out with my friend’s Vinny & Gail, I always get in heated debate regarding how soon autonomous full self driving vehicles will be “a thing” I am a crazy Tesla enthusiast and Gail is a skeptical, critic, realist. So this video is basically a video contract documenting our bet of .01 bitcoin which makes this bet even more exciting. Because it could take 10 years for this bet to be completed, the price of bitcoin could change drastically as we’ve seen in the past 10 years of Bitcoin’s. price fluctuation. So this bet basically spurred Gail to buy and hodl some bitcoin to ensure there is no possibility this bet bankrupts her in 10 years. Enjoy the shinanigans!
For a technology that needs the highest safety standards to secure regulatory and public support, though, the rollout will take years, all the while consuming billions of dollars in capital.
The price of an entry ticket into the driverless-car contest at roughly $1 billion. That buys the necessary teams, components development and a test fleet, among other startup costs. Much more will be needed to roll out customer-ready fleets on a commercial scale.
Then there is Tesla, which at last year’s “autonomy day” pledged to have one million robotaxis on the road by the end of 2022. Elon Musk walked back that promise in April and said it might happen next year. At the rate he is conducting business, Tesla will be lost in the near future. What happened with Waymo in Phoenix? Zippo, zero, zilch with expanding to similar cities with no inclement weather. The cost of the service is just too high for Waymo to turn a profit.
Waymo has a staff of fleet operators that oversees the cars and provides guidance:
confirming that the car has chosen a safe route through a construction zone, cleaning staff in its garages, call center to respond when a customer pushes a button inside the car to call for help, or road side assistance. Waymo's driverless Pacificas are frequently tailed by a Waymo roadside-assistance van. If a Pacifica gets stuck, a van can quickly arrive at the scene to fix the problem.
Bottom line, is that the technology is developing, but the manpower, dollars and how to tackle bad weather, city congestion, construction and even signage in large metropolitan areas that people can't understand is key. I say Leave that program for a simple shuttle program.
Add to the issue, using a bitcoin which will have bottomed out way before then makes this whole idea laughable at this time.
