The other day I was thinking. I have an old laptop from college I wonder if I can mine crypto on it.

And I bet many other people, maybe yourself, have thought the same. So I decided to go through the process of figuring out from start to finish how to mine cryptocurrencies on my old 2015 retina MacBook pro and make a video explaining everything I learned so that you don’t have to spend the time doing it yourself.

I Ended up trying to mine Monero, Dogecoin, and Shiba Inu, and wanted to share my results.

And for the as quick as possible explain like i’m five explanations of crypto mining here we go. Basically all the transactions of a crypto in a given timeframe are packaged into a block. That block has to be verified, so everyone supporting the blockchain is using computers to solve an equation to verify the block. Whoever is the first to verify the block gets a reward. Now people people combine their computing power in mining pools to give themselves the best chance to get a reward and split the reward when they do get it.

Oversimplified its a lottery and having more powerful computers is like buying more tickets, and mining pools are like people pooling together in a lottery.

And real quick this is not going to be a tutorial on how to mine crypto step by step because that would take forever and get way too complicated, this is just an explanation of what happened when i tried mining with an old device to help you figure out if you might want to try what I tried yourself. And you know I had to try mining dogecoin and shiba inu so we’ll get to that.

So first off I made sure to wipe my macbook clean. And i’ve had it for over 6 years now, so i’m not too worried if something happens to it because i have another pc i built that I use for all of my work normally. But I did want to make sure that any personal info or files were removed just in case i ended up compromising my device. So be sure not to do this on a device you have personal or sensitive information on by any means.

Then I went ahead and did some research on how to get started crypto mining, and if my old macbook could even do it.

I already knew about ASIC miners which are basically machines built exclusively for mining specific cryptos, but those can cost thousands of dollars. They’re basically the next tier up from normal gpu mining everyone talks about being the reason nobody can ever buy a gpu these days.

And it turns out this mac has a super weak gpu and from what i’ve researched it would probably be optimized to do cpu mining. So that’s what I’m going to be doing.

And when we’re looking for what crypto to mine we had to funnel it down a bit. Well bitcoin and ethererum has so much competition for mining, and from what i’ve read you basically need to have an ASIC miner to be profitable. So i started to turn my eye to smaller cap crytpos with likely less competition.

And what i found seemed super promising.

Monero (XMR) :

Monero stands out among other cryptocurrencies as it is widely considered as the most advanced anonymous digital currency. Monero is based on a proof-of-work algorithm known as CryptoNight, which is designed with certain specifications that make it difficult for Monero mining using ASICs to work well. In turn, it is actually relatively easy to mine Monero.

  1. Basically, unless you have a decent mobo that can handle a VERY powerful CPU or multiple CPUs AND you can keep it cool, you COULD mine Monero profitably.
