FC Inter Milano vs Getafe CF: Score prediction & betting tips

Inter Milan welcomes Getafe to the Veltins-Arena on Wednesday for this UEFA Europa League Round of 16 match.

UEFA announced that due to the Coronavirus lockdown, this match as well as the quarter and semi-finals will all now take place as single-leg ties. The matches will also take place at neutral grounds, in Germany.

This will mark the first time these two teams have met in an official match. In fact, Getafe have never faced an Italian opponent in a competitive match.

Of course, it won’t be Inter’s first time playing host to a Spanish opponent. In total, they have welcomed a La Liga side to Milan on twenty-five occasions. However, their record of just ten wins in twenty-five will be of concern.

The last Spanish side Inter faced was Barcelona back in December. An Ansu Fati goal four minutes from time gave Barca all three points in the Champions League Group F match.

FC Inter Milano vs Getafe CF: What are the odds?

Inter come into the match in good form having won each of their last three league games. However, their recent home record will be a concern. They have won just three of six here; a run that also included two red cards. Regardless, they start the day as odds on favourite, at 3/4.

Conte’s Inter Milan have been criticised this season for ‘drawing too many games’. They lost three matches fewer than eventual champions Juventus. However, the title was lost in the ten games they drew to Juve’s five. This could make the odds of 5/2 for a stalemate on Wednesday very appealing.

Getafe have been on an awful run of form since the restart. They have won just one of their eleven matches since La Liga resumed back in June. This run includes a failure to win any of the six matches on their travels. It is no surprise then to see them start the match as huge 15/4 outsiders.

FC Inter Milano vs Getafe CF: Most likely goalscorers?

The top scorer for Internazionale in the Europa League this season is Romelu Lukaku, with two goals. He is also the club’s top scorer in Serie A, with an impressive twenty-three league goals. The Belgian international has been in fine form since the restart. The 27-year old has six goals in his last eleven appearances.

Getafe’s Ángel Rodríguez and Jaime Mata are joint-top scorers for the club in the Europa League, with 3 goals. The pair are also the club’s two top scorers in La Liga, with ten and eleven goals respectively.

The pair seem to have misplaced their scoring boots during lockdown though. Ángel failed to score in any of his eight appearances since the restart. While Mata is on a run of six games without a goal.

A major talking point coming into this match will no doubt be Antonio Conte.

The former Juventus, Italy and Chelsea manager is undoubtedly a brilliant tactician. However, wherever he goes in his career, it always seems to end with Conte embroiled in controversy or fighting with the owners. Often both.

This inescapable truth was brought to the fore once again this week. “I don’t think the work of the players has been recognised and I don’t think my work has been recognised,” said Conte after Inter’s 2-0 victory in their final match of the season at Atalanta.

“We all received very little protection from the club, absolutely zero. We’ll discuss it all at the end of the season. I have to meet the president and he’s in China right now.” Concluded Antonio.

Speculation has been rife ever since that he will soon depart the club. Massimiliano Allegri is already being hailed as the man to replace him at the Nerazzurri.

This is all far from a perfect backdrop to launch a final assault on winning the Europa League. It’s a competition they haven’t won since 1997/98; prior to the UEFA Cup’s rebranding to the Europa League.

FC Inter Milano vs Getafe CF: The view from Spain

Inter will also need to bring their A-game if they have any hope of getting past Getafe.

José Bordalás tactics at Getafe come in for a lot of praise, or criticism, depending on who you listen to. He has been likened to the Sean Dyche of Spanish football. A mediocre footballer who has developed his coaching philosophy to help the underdog overcome the bigger, richer opponents.

They play a style that is aggressive and considered not particularly pleasing on the eye. Bordalás’ teams also dabble in the dark arts in a way that would make any Diego Simeone or Jose Mourinho aficionado proud.

Perhaps all this does a disservice to Getafe and ‘Pepe’ Bordalás. People quote the stats of the number of fouls and cards they receive, but this is merely the consequence of any aggressive, high-pressing side.

If anything, the best comparison to this Getafe side and their tactics would perhaps be the title-winning Dortmund side under the tutelage of Jurgen Klopp. They play in a 4-4-2 regardless of the opponent and look to strangle the opposition as soon as they lose possession of the ball.

They do this by remaining extremely compact and always keeping numerical advantage around the ball, particularly down the central band of the pitch. When the ball is lost, they collapse in on the ball preventing the opponent from having any time or space in their immediate vicinity to find a pass.

This leaves the ball-carrier with only bad localised passing options, or riskier longer passes outside the press which. These passing targets are prone to intercepts by alert Getafe runners.

FC Inter Milano team news vs Getafe CF

Matías Vecino has only managed two brief cameo appearances for Inter since the restart. He has been struggling with a knee injury which looks likely to rule him out on Wednesday once again.

Stefano Sensi hasn’t featured for Inter since January due to a hamstring injury. It is unlikely we see him on the pitch again this season.

Kwadwo Asamoah’s season has been decimated by injuries. He last started for Inter back in October, and has managed just one cameo appearance since. Asamoah wasn’t named in any of Inter’s last six squads and is unlikely to feature again this season.

Milan Skriniar, Inter’s star defender, has only started one of the last four matches for the Nerazzurri. He is expected to be restored to the starting XI for such a crucial match.

Getafe CF team news vs FC Inter Milano

Kenedy and Deyverson won’t feature for Getafe again this season. The players have returned to Chelsea and Palmeiras respectively after the expiry of their loan agreements.

Erick Cabaco also won’t be available on Wednesday as he wasn’t included in Getafe’s Europa League squad.

Oghenekaro Etebo has missed the last six matches for Getafe due to injury. It is unlikely he will play any part on Wednesday evening.

Xabi Etxeita has missed Getafe’s last three matches due to a suspension. He is expected to replace David Timor at center-back on Wednesday. Timor may revert to his usual position as a defensive midfielder.

Allan Nyom also missed Getafe’s last league match due to suspension. The versatile Cameroonian could also return to the starting XI at full-back.
