This song is beautiful and sad. This part in the bible of the murder of the baby boys by King Herod on the bible always disturbed me as a child and it still does to this day.

This Christmas eve I cruised Youtube for the various versions of Coventry Carol. Joan Baez sings it wonderfully — #1 in my book..
The song has a long a tragic backstory, from it's biblical theme to its creation in the Middle Ages right up to the Nazi terror bombing of Coventry, England, in 1940, a few weeks before Christmas, and then the BBC broadcasting a choir singing it the following Christmas eve from the bombed out church in Coventry.
An angelic voice, and a quite moving rendition of s great carol.
I used tolisten to this on an LP, I thought that Joan Baez had the voice of an angel

I'm singing this carol with my SATB choir. There are two versions of the tune, very similar to each other. My "Carols for Choirs 1" book states at the top of the First Version – 'Original tune of 1591'. And the 2nd version as 'Modern version of tune arranged by Martin Shaw'. We're singing the latter. The 1st has 3 voice parts, the 2nd, 4 voice parts.
I've loved this song since singing it in Junior school!
