I had this song in my head all night for some reason and the more that I hummed it to myself, the more it just reminded me of my Grandma.
Yesterday was actually her birthday and if she was still with us, she would’ve been 70 years old.
Most of you wouldn’t know this but, Grandma actually taught me my very first chords on guitar back when I was still single digits old. I can still remember the day – where I was and how I was sitting as she moved my little fingers into the D shape on Grandad’s old Yamaha acoustic.
Back then, I wasn’t even close to being a singer or a guitarist (I wouldn’t begin playing guitar or even considering singing regularly until well into my mid/late high school years) But it was Grandma that planted those seeds of interest way back on that hot summer day while I was visiting Bowen for my primary school holidays.
All that to say, if you still have your grandparents here with you, I’d strongly encourage you to get around them as much as you can (if you can). Allow them to speak into your world and sow seeds of wisdom and ambition. Don’t wait until all you have is the memory of conversations long gone.
I’m thankful that I had the chance to spend a bunch of quality time with my Grandma. And I’m even more-so thankful that she’s no longer in the pain that she was in when I said goodbye to her for the last time. I just hope that this cover does something to you and maybe even just for a moment, causes you to reflect on the senior people in your life that you could maybe still be learning from and doing life with.
As for you Grandma,
I love you. And I still miss you.
