Sevilla vs Roma: Match preview
No club loves the UEFA Europa League quite like Sevilla.
Los Nervionenses have won this competition a record five times, lifting the trophy in 2006, 2007, 2014, 2015 and 2016.
This is remarkable given that, in their entire 130-year history, they’ve won only six trophies domestically, with only three of those coming since 1948.
This season, Julen Lopetegui’s side have already qualified for next season’s Champions League group stages, finishing fourth in La Liga.
They surged to that position, amassing 23 points from the 11 games since lockdown.
In fact, Los Palanganas have not lost any of their last 17 matches in all competitions dating back to early February.
However, they almost did not make it through to this round in Europe.
Sevilla cruised through the group stages, topping a poor group above APOEL, Qarabağ and Dudelange.
However, in the round of 32, they found CFR Cluj a tough nut to crack.
In the first leg, Youssef En-Nesyri scored an eventually decisive goal in the first leg 1-1 draw at Stadionul Dr. Constantin Rădulescu.
In the return meeting at Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, Cluj thought they’d won it in stoppage time before VAR saved Sevilla, sending them through on away goals with a goalless draw.
However, Sevilla are much improved since then and will fancy their chances, not only of winning this tie but going all the way to the final at RheinEnergieStadion.
Will the Spanish side book their place in the quarter-finals?
Will Roma knock out the record winners?
Roma meanwhile are looking to win their first European trophy since lifting the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1961.
Their last trophy of any kind was actually was the Coppa Italia 12 years ago.
Despite this lack of success, Roma will believe they can go through as this is a very evenly matched tie.
I Giallorossi finished in fifth place in Serie A despite taking 22 points from the last 24 available.
This included a come from behind 3-1 victory at Allianz Stadium against nine-in-a-row champions Juventus on Saturday night.
Nikola Kalinić equalising before a pair of Diego Perotti goals saw them to a win in Turin.
This means Paulo Fonseca’s side have qualified for next season’s Europa League group stages but would get into the Champions League if they can win this competition.
So far in this year’s Europa League, they’ve finished second in Group J, behind İstanbul Başakşehir but above Borussia Mönchengladbach and Wolfsberg.
Then, they just about beat Gent in the round of 32; a 1-0 win in Italy was followed by a 1-1 draw in Belgium.
That set up this round of 16 tie at MSV-Arena in Duisburg.
This is a single-elimination tie; no second legs so therefore no second chances.
The winners of this match will meet either Olympiacos or Wolverhampton Wanderers in the quarter-finals on 11 August.
Will Roma knock out the record winners?
Sevilla team news vs Roma
Julen Lopetegui’s side have not played since 19 July; a well earned rest after a gruelling six weeks of action.
This does mean he can name his strongest available XI for this very tough encounter.
Goalkeeper Tomáš Vaclík suffered a horrific knee injury against Eibar on 6 July so is still out.
Back-up Bono will continue to deputise.
In defence, Jules Koundé and Diego Carlos are the usual centre-backs.
At full-back, captain Jesús Navas will start at right back and, on the other side, Sergio Reguilón could continue ahead of Sergio Escudero.
In midfield, Éver Banega has played 234 matches and won two Europa Leagues with Sevilla.
However, if they were to lose this one, it’ll be his last appearance for the club as he’s joining Saudi side Al-Shabab after they are eliminated.
Despite his imminent departure, Banega is likely to start alongside Joan Jordán and Nemanja Gudelj.
Fernando, Óliver Torres and Franco Vázquez would be on the bench.
In attack, Lucas Ocampos and Munir are their best wingers but Rony Lopes and Suso are very capable back-ups.
Through the middle, Luuk de Jong will start again despite the fact he’s only scored seven goals in 40 appearances this season.
Youssef En-Nesyri, despite netting the goal that got them to this round, will be on the bench once more.
Roma team news vs Sevilla
Paulo Fonseca does not share the luxury of his opposite number as Roma last played as recently as Saturday.
He did rotate a bit for that win at Juventus and all of his big guns will return here.
First choice goalkeeper Pau López could return in place of Antonio Mirante or Daniel Fuzato after a broken wrist.
At the back, Chris Smalling’s loan from Manchester United expires after this game but he could start.
Federico Fazio and Aleksandar Kolarov could make up the back three.
Juan Jesus, Roger Ibañez and Gianluca Mancini are the other options.
Leonardo Spinazzola and Bruno Peres are the usual wing-backs; Davide Zappacosta is the alternative.
Jordan Veretout and Amadou Diawara are the first-choice sitting duo despite the fact Bryan Cristante and Gonzalo Villar started on Saturday.
Nicolò Zaniolo could start further forward with Henrikh Mkhitaryan the other likely to start.
Lorenzo Pellegrini, Cengiz Ünder, Carles Pérez, Justin Kluivert and Diego Perotti are other good options.
In attack, Edin Džeko will return having scored 20 goals this season.
Nikola Kalinić is his backup.
