Sevilla vs Valencia: Match preview

Sevilla will return to the UEFA Champions League next season.

Last weekend’s 2-0 home victory over Mallorca ensured Los Nervionenses will finish in the top four for the first time in three season.

Lucas Ocampos and Youssef En-Nesyri the scorers in that Sunday night clash.

Then, on Thursday, they drew 0-0 with Real Sociedad in San Sebastián so will almost certainly finish fourth, behind Atlético Madrid.

Julen Lopetegui’s side are actually unbeaten in 15 Liga games dating back to a defeat in Vigo on 9 February.

This bodes well because, despite the fact top four is secured, they have plenty to play for this season.

The record five-times UEFA Cup/Europa League winners are still in this season’s competition, eyeing up more European silverware.

On 6 August, they’ll take on AS Roma in Duisburg in a single-elimination round of 16 tie.

The winners of that will face either Wolves or Olympiacos in the quarter-finals with a semi-final against probably Manchester United awaiting.

FC København, İstanbul Başakşehir and LASK will have something to say about that.

Either way, Sevilla are one of the big boys left in the Europa League so will want to maintain their unbeaten run ahead of that.

Will they do just that at Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán?

Where will Valencia finish?

VALENCIA, SPAIN – FEBRUARY 29: Geoffrey Kondogbia of Valencia CF in action during the Liga match between Valencia CF and Real Betis Balompie at Estadio Mestalla on February 29, 2022 in Valencia, Spain. (Photo by Silvestre Szpylma/Quality Sport Images/Getty Images)

Valencia’s potential future in European competition is up in the air.

Los Che have had a trademark shambolic season which saw beloved coach Marcelino sacked in August and his replacement Albert Celades not even last until the end of the season.

Voro is in for his eighth spell as either full-time or caretaker manager and, somehow, might just take Valencia into Europe.

On Thursday, Kevin Gameiro got the only goal as they beat Liga’s bottom club Espanyol 1-0 at home.

That made it back to back home wins for Los Murcelagos who are still in with a shout of Europa League for next season.

They’re currently eighth which would see them miss out by one position.

Getafe are currently one point above Valencia with Sociedad one point above the side from Madrid.

Quiet simply, Valencia must win this one and hope either La Real or Getafe do not win their matches.

Will they hold up their end of the bargain in Adalucía?

BARCELONA, SPAIN – OCTOBER 28: Head coach Julen Lopetegui of Real Madrid CF looks on during the La Liga match between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid CF at Camp Nou on October 28, 2018 in Barcelona, Spain. (Photo by David Ramos/Getty Images)

Julen Lopetegui has rotated since the restart but will want to keep this unbeaten run going.

Goalkeeper Tomáš Vaclík suffered an injury against Eibar three games ago so Bono will continue to deputise for the rest of the domestic season.

In defence, Jules Koundé is back to partner Diego Carlos at centre-back with Sergi Gómez missing out.

At full-back, captain Jesús Navas will start at right back and, on the other side, Sergio Reguilón could continue ahead of Sergio Escudero.

In midfield, this will be Éver Banega’s 235th and last domestic appearance for the club before he joins Saudi side Al-Shabab.

He is expected to be around for the Europa League next month and will start alongside Joan Jordán and Nemanja Gudelj.

Fernando, Óliver Torres and Franco Vázquez would be on the bench.

In attack, Lucas Ocampos and Munir are their best wingers but Rony Lopes and Suso are very capable back-ups.

Through the middle Luuk de Jong start again despite the fact he’s only scored seven goals in 40 appearances this season.

Youssef En-Nesyri, despite scoring on Sunday and starting on Thursday, will be on the bench once more.

MILAN, ITALY – FEBRUARY 19: Ferran Torres of Valencia CF getting into the field during the UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg match between Atalanta and Valencia CF at San Siro Stadium on February 19, 2022 in Milan, Italy. (Photo by Marcio Machado/Eurasia Sport Images/Getty Images)

Can Voro’s side keep alive their top seven hopes?

Jasper Cillessen will be in goal.

In defence, Ezequiel Garay has now left the club but has been injured since February which has been a major problem for them.

Because, despite the fact Gabriel is back, none of the other centre-backs are reliable.

Mouctar Diakhaby could keep his place alongside him ahead of Eliaquim Mangala and youngster Hugo Guillamón.

At left-back, José Luis Gayà is injured and his deputy Jaume Costa was sent off against Espanyol.

So, unless someone is shunted out of position, youngster Adrià Guerrero could start.

On the other side, Daniel Wass could start ahead of Alessandro Florenzi and Thierry Correia.

Cristiano Piccini is injured.

In midfield, Dani Parejo is set to leave the club this summer so is unlikely to start.

So, Geoffrey Kondogbia could be partnered by Carlos Soler again with Francis Coquelin also likely to move on.

Out-wide, Ferran Torres is available again after injury and will start with Gonçalo Guedes on the other flank.

Denis Cheryshev could be joined on the bench by Lee Kang-in.

Because, in attack, Maxi Gómez will come in to partner Kevin Gameiro.

Rodrigo is injured but Rubén Sobrino and Manu Vallejo will be in reserve.

Will Valencia keep alive their European hopes?
