  1. Time is a ticking my love
    Can no longer stay
    Sounds of the alarms
    And I must go away
    Ordered out over seas
    For many a weary day
To the banks, of a place they call Leopold Canal

    Oh, Willie, Sweet Willie
    Don't leave me here alone
For I wish to God above,
    That I was never born
    Parting from you my love
    I'd rather be buried alive
So stay home with me Sweet Willie
And I'll be your loving wife

    Oh Annie, Sweet Annie
    Surely can not stay
    The government has ordered me
    And I must go away
    The government has ordered me
    Set up their command
And I'm bound away my love
    For the Leopold Canal

    Cruel was the war
    When it first began
    Out of Canada
    We lost, many a man
    Out of Canada
    Men were battered and torn
Thousands lay dead on Leopold's shore

    Sitting in the trenches
    Couldn't help but curse
    This cruel bloody war
    Had taken me from her
Taken me from my sweet heart
And the place where I loved to dwell
And shipped me off to the bloody banks,
    Of the Leopold Canal

Time is a ticking my love
    Can no longer stay
    Sounds of the alarms
    And I must go away
    Ordered out over seas
    For many a weary day
To the banks, of a place they call Leopold Canal

  2. Met these guys in the Uk for the first time and they are from Saskatoon, just a bunch of down to earth talented musicians. They've got talent I wish I were their agent.

  3. On the occasion of Canada Day, on Friday 1 July 2016, in Knokke-Heist, Belgium, during the Academic Session we could enjoy your very beautiful song that really says a lot about the precious, profound and very sincere relationship between Canada and Belgium. “The Banks of the Leopold Canal” was stunningly well sung by ‘Almost Heaven’ during their tribute to Canadian musicians as part of the official program. Your song and the lyrics in particular, really touched me for many different reasons.
When the music is really good and the lyrics are meaningful, what else can one wish in everyday and simple happiness. But in this case there is more, much more !
The Banks of the Leopold Canal and the surrounding area for us Belgians, but also for many Canadians, has a very important significance. It stands for unforgettable sacrifice, it stands for freedom.
In 1944, at those locations fierce battles were fought in which many brave Canadians lost their lives for our freedom. Something we will never forget and we’ll always remember.
Whenever you would come to Belgium, please take some time and do not hesitate to contact me. With great pleasure I will show you these locations about which your beautiful song is going, a song of Canadians … as a tribute to Canadian soldiers and their families.
This is what we do as everlasting respect and gratitude for you Canadians, our liberators. Feel free to forward my sincere response to The Deep Dark Woods band members, whom I am very grateful for their wonderful song.
    Sincerely yours, Walter CAMI

  4. CAN'T STOP PLAYING THIS TRACK. ITS BRILLIANT!!!!

TDDW are playing in Bush Hall in London on the 4th of May. For real country come to this show not fucking Mumford and Sons. That is all.

  5. Battle of the Scheldt :September-November 1944
    Part 1: The Leopold Canal

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission would establish the Canadian military cemetery at Adagem where 848 Canadian and 298 Polish and British soldiers lie.

  6. A sad and beautiful song that can actually give you goosebumps. Nobody writes songs like this anymore, except Deep Dark Woods.

  7. One of the most bloody and pointless battles of WWII, kudos guys for remembering a usually forgotten Canadian battle!
