The Mitchells vs. The Machines walks a perfect line for a family film — it’s funny and thrilling for kids of all ages, with a deep, heartfelt story that will have the adults in the room wiping away a tear or two by the time the credits roll. In fact there’s a lot going on in this movie that only adults might notice.

The action of The Mitchells vs. The Machines is driven by the Mitchells’ fight against the machine apocalypse, sure, but the emotional heart is the bond between Katie and her dad, Rick. This leads to some seriously powerful moments that might have flown over the heads of the younger viewers in the audience. Here are the things only adults notice in The Mitchells vs. The Machines.

  1. JSJSJS IS NO ONE GONNA POINT OUT THAT KATIE LOOKS LIKE A GENDERBEND OF MICHAEL FOR BE MORE CHILL? THEY BOTH EVEN HAVE THE PRIDE PIN AND THE SAME SWEATER OH MY GODDD

  2. There is another hint of Katie being part of LGBT much earlier in the film.

She made a video about asking a girl named Chloe out the the prom….it probably didn't go very well because Katie has moved on to Jade.

It's nice to see an LGBT character has more personality than just stereotypically revolve around their sexuality (I'm sick of that stuff in "Riverdale" to a point where Kevin immediately became a character I hate & just want to punch him in the gut). And it's nice that she & Jade have a healthy relationship, instead a sickening toxic one (as seen in too many times in "Riverdale" & in that "Steven-Ra" reboot).

  3. The Medal of Honor quip at the end caught me off guard. Not sure I would refer to it as "some Congressional Medal of Honor or something."

  4. Why do I feel like Rick should be voiced by Nick Offerman if the creator wanted it to.

  5. I’m really glad they didn’t make Katie being lesbian/bi (I’m not sure) the main plot, lots of movies have their sexuality get in the way of the movie. But it’s nice that they mentioned it but it was so quick that younger viewers didn’t catch on

  6. how did I just hear in moms quick talk that she said “Are you and Jade official and are you bringing her home for Thanksgivings?” LIKE IM SO DEAF ERRRGG also that rainbow pin on Katie’s shirt kind sUs-

  7. Even tho I'm not an adult or a father
    I understand mr mitchells
His connection with her daughter is just as similar to my father and sister,My sister didn't even noticed what my father had sacrificed and that she also sees the bad side
I hang out with my dad a lot so understand, his perspective more than my sister

  8. Who else noticed Katie's rainbow pin right away? 😂 Made me like the film even more. I like that it was subtle though, it seems like movies now and days whenever they have a LGBT character, they paint it as their entire character and all up in your face. idk, it's just kinda annoying cuz I don't think your sexuality should define you.

  9. I am glad there is a person who is apart of the lgbtq+ community and them being apart of it is not their whole personality and is only slightly hinted at until they officially say she is at the end

  10. I’m sad to see not many people are talking about the frequent little animated illustrations Katie “edits” into the film. Yeah, in conjunction with the dated meme references, it’s meh, but on their own, they’re really fun and contribute a lot to the film’s style of having Katie edit in these amazing scenes.

  11. The mother is ethnic, Mexican-American, Southern Italian decent or Christianized Iranian etc. etc.

  12. I am tired of dad and son always being borderline stupid and irresponsible, while mom and daughter is always smart and independent responsible and can fight. Like can we be done with not giving men and boys an actual role model in movies and animations and stop making them fodder for everyone else's story arch.

  13. I loved everything about this movie, and as a queer person myself seeing such amazing casual representation easily made it one of my favorite movies this year 🙂
